Actually the question is for all controls.  I am working directly with an ASCX file that MS Expression v2 can edit in wysiwg mode.  Makes it way easier.  I have a black background and I want the breadcrumb control to render the fonts in white.   I have done the following so far:

1. Set all the nested CSS classes to white (if I put text into the same <TD> the text renders white)
2. Have set the CSS object SkinObject to white in my skin.CSS file

If I go to the object file in Admin\Skins\Breadcrumb.ASCX and set the color there it works ok.  But that seems way wrong.  It won't make the skins portable.  Is there someway to propagate the setting down?

That's exactly the way to do it. Always modify the same element in your skin.css instead of editing the DNN CSS files.  I like to use the web development toolbars for IE and Firefox to see what CSS class is inerited by the control or text, but working through the CSS files is okay too.
