Hi,

I have just come back from a big Internet exhibition in the UK where SEO/Google was the big topic. When I asked about SEO in .NET CMSs the presenters seemed to take in a large intake of breath and then said thats going to be tricky, and yes they were Joomla, Drupal fans..... However it did get me thinking about SEO and DNN. What is the state of play...? Is it good at this? Is there a whitepaper on what should be done to get one's DNN site at the top of the search rankings...?

Out of interest there was one .NET CMS being sold for its SEO benefits and its speaker listed out the following attributes to enhance SEO in a CMS:

a) XHTML 1.0 Strict compliance

b) Clean Code

c) Friendly URLs

d) Text based Navigation

e) Mandated Actions ie must use Alt tags and Metatags

f) Spell checkers and Link checkers to prevent misspelling going to incorrect site.

g) Robot.txt management

h) Auto gen Google Site Maps.

i) Autocategoristion.

Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated....

Thanks in advance,

Sam

First reaction is that XHTM 1.0 Strict isn't a requirement for SEO.  Technically, clean code isn't either, though he may be referring to clean HTML delivered to the client.  Looks like DNN meets his criteria pretty well.  FWIW, Joomla isn't that great for SEO and Drupal isn't much better.  Both rely on add-ons and a lot of content publishing knowledge and attention.  As do all CMS products by the way.  Keep in mind there is CMS for the techie and CMS for the real world.  You won't get the best SEO or Sec 508 compliance when the content is cut and pasted from Microsoft Publisher.

Sam,

DotNetNuke core team and project teams are working on SEO improvements and IMO we already implemented a number of features like Search Engine Friendly and Human friendly URLs, Google SiteMap generation, XHTML strict compliance and more.

Regarding your list

a) XHTML strict compliance is an ongiong focus, core and all new modules are checked before each release.

b) speaking of HTML and CSS code (.vb code is not seen by SE) this mostly affects modules and skins. For modules, this is closely related with a) and using tableless design, Most teamsa re working on it, but IMO there is still room for improvement

c) Search Engine Friendly URLs and Human Friendly URLs have been implemented and can be used (SFU is enabled by default)

d) depends on the menu component, your are using in the skin. There are multiple navigation components delivered with DNN, Jon Henning will be able to give details about Search Optimization built in.

e) this is done in modules and richtext editor, FCKEditor support easy addition of ALT-Text, but it depends on the authors of the content to use it.

f) Spell checkers can be enabled in FCKEditor and in User's browser. Due to the modular archtecture of DNN a centralized management of LInks and spell checking text is more difficult than in a system with a centralized content editor section - but the current archtecture allows for much more flexibility in module functions.

g) Since all pages are virtual, I don't see a need for a dynamically generated robot.txt

h) included, see site settings

i) I don't see the conjunction with SEO. This is of advantage for static content and can currently be implemented in individual modules. There are ideas to provide a centralized categorization support, but AFAIK there are no ongoing activities atm.

Sam

I won't repeat what others have already posted, but I would just like to add that you can take DNN as far as you like into the SEO tweaking world.  There are plenty of third-party products for improving different aspects of DNN, whether it be Xhtml-compliant skins, css-based menus, improved friendly Urls, content modules with more control over page tags and page headings.  This has all been written about countless times in these forums and all over the internet.  Yes, there are things that the core code could do better, but, it's an open source system, so you can always tweak it to your own needs. If you can't program yourself, there are plenty of developers who will help you out.

I also agree that xhtml compliance is not a key element of SEO, nor are complete CSS skins.  These things are good goals in themselves, and won't hinder your site, but one good incoming link from a high PR page will do 10x more than removing tables from your layout.

The truth is the largest determinant of the SEO success of a DNN site is the site owner.   There is no silver bullet to gain the top spot for a search term, it takes careful knowledge and understanding of your site and your competitors, and a systematic process for improving your search resutls.  Even if the DNN developers stopped all work on other features and made DNN the most SEO-Friendly CMS in the world on any technology,  search engine results would only come to those who understood what they were doing and systematically applied themselves to the task of getting their site to the top.  My own site is at the top of the list currently for a few key phrases I have chosen, and it's plan vanilla DNN with a few third party add ons.  In most cases, it's not the framework holding DNN sites back, it's the person creating the site.
