So I got a 2003 server running in vmware with IIS/ASP.NET installed. I'm installing Sp1 and hotfixes, I will install .NET Framework 2 afterwards, and I will install MSDE2000 with the latest service pack. I want to try DNN version 4.

Do I need to install Visual Studio or that Visual Web thing 2005? The manual and the site is unclear about it, but both are mentioned sometimes. The .VSI installer thing requires Visual Studio right?

I've read the part in the manual on which I download I need, but I'm still not sure if I need the source, install or starter kit?

So what else guys?

The point of all my efforts is to create an intranet site for my department in which we can organize documents and start discussions. Call it a hybrid knowledge base or whatever. I was looking into Sharepoint but that is outrageously expensive, it's out of the question.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Oke, I read in another post that the Visual Studio stuff is for developers only. If I just want to run the portal I shouldn't need that. That also rules out the Starter kit since that won't install without VS.

Cool, so you ARE doing your homework. Here's a reward: Install has only the files needed to run DNN and Source has source code.

Wow. Just what I was waiting for ;)

Oke, I know what I need now. Let's forget about that part shall we?

Am I on the right track with the server config? Is there anything in particular that I should pay attention to?

I've installed a million websites on *nix with apache and php and mysql. Never before have I done it with IIS and ASP. I am not a complete wuss with Windows servers though, just never worked with IIS before.

Windows 2003 and IIS 6.0 is fine. DNN 4 runs with ASP.NET 2.0 so after you install IIS, you should have ASP.NET 1.1 by default. Add .net 2.0 and you will have 2.0. After all this has been done, review the installation guide carefully. You don't want to mess up the good pace you have been keeping.
