I have a portal called www.mydomain.com and I want to change the domain name to www.mynewdomain.com.

Is there a simple way to do this?  I can't find a way to edit the portal domain. I don't want to just give it a new alias.

Do I have to create a new portal and import the site as a template?  I've tried this in the past but the import often failed.

If I could just go into SQL and edit a table it would be great?

You can change this in the "PortalAlias" table, [HttpAlias] field.

Why?  Especially since this would be the proper way to do this.

Well it's about Google.

I've got a domain that was initially a  dot com  e.g. www.mydomain.com.

The client wanted this changed to .co.uk.

So, I created a new portal alias. Simple.  However, Google ranks the .com domain higher.

Whatever I do I can't seem to get the co.uk domain to appear in the search as does the .com domain. They are the same site.

I wondered whether or not Google was able to tell the difference between the master portal name and the portal alias?

Is this just Google or what?

Google only sees what it crawls.  You can exclude the .com domain with a robots.txt file.  The portal alias doesn't really have anything to do with this, as long as the .com domain still resolves to thhis site and there are no exclusions, Google will try to crawl it.  Removing the .com domain from DNS will stop Google from indexing it.
