Being on different servers is definitely not the problem. I haven't tried it since Server 2000 but at that time you couldn't run IIS and AD on the same server without jumping through a bunch of hoops.

Well, we developed a module that imports data from Active Directory before, and we ran into a few problem there before. We eventually solved it by leaving all fields blank, so that it used default values (we assume) and it worked. Apparently we can't do that with this provider? The problem only occured on our network, btw. And also, sometimes the connecting would fail, in less than 10% of the attempts. The customer did not have these problems.

Anyway, now they want to add a module to post news items etc, but we need the "validation" from AD to do this...

Is there anything specificly I should be aware of?

I'm surprised leaving the fields blank worked as it wouldn't know where to look for the AD. Have you tried running impersonation in the web.config? It's a case of sometimes you do and sometimes you don't. I have to use it to connect to our AD at work but I don't think I need to at home (it's been a long time since I had to mess with the web.config there).

I am getting the same error on a development server that is NOT part of the domain. My question is: for this auth. provider to work, does the web server need to be part of the domain?

Yes it does.
