We have now received an email from PowerDNN on the security alias. More information will be posted once we dig into this deeper.

My comments are my own and are offered WITHOUT PREJUDICE

I want to withdraw my expression of disappointment with the DotNetNuke team.  It looks like they were responding more or less at the same time that I was writing.  Having ready the several additional messages here and Shaun Walker's blog, it does seem that they've been devoting considerable time today to this issue.

I appreciate that and the open way of dealing with an issue that isn't necessarily good being discussed in public.

Thanks, team!

Shaun,

Thank you for the clarification regarding it not being an arbitrary modification or script execution.  This most likely reduces the associated risk of the operation, at least to some point.

Everyone,

I wanted to update everyone regarding the e-mail I sent to powerDNN regarding the security tool.  I have yet to receive a response and the tool is still up and fully functional.

What's a poor boy to do in this sort of situation?

My advice would be to monitor the DotNetNuke security notices and these forums for information being issued by the Core Security Team. As well as monitoring activity on your site.  If you are very concerned about the level of risk then consider taking your site offline temporarily until there is some official word.  if you have your own DNN guru you trust then also talk to them.

I'd also prefer that my hoster not alter any of my site files especially without my permission. If they were the only ones that knew about it they should have first contacted DNN to provide a patch and then the patch could have been offered to users through normal channels. I'd rather make changes/patches to my site myself.

I don't think anyone owning a DNN install wants to go from having full-source to thier Dotnetnuke.DLL...to paying $20 for a "shiny new" Dotnetnuke.dll that does not include the source.
