Hi, I have run into a complete dead end here and hope that some of you can help me. When I'm opening the solution file for the DNN 4.02 in VS2005 I get the following message: "Microsoft Visual Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close". I then have the option to send error report to MS, not sending such a report, trying to debug. When this messagebox is closed (regardless of what I choose) VS2005 restarts - without opening DNN. If I then try to open the DNN solution from File\Open, the same thing happens again. I'm really stuck here because there doesn't seem to be any workaround for this problem. It should be added that VS2005 behaves excellently inn all other projects, it's just DNN that fails.

In order to give you something to begin with when answering this question what I have done is the following:

  • Clean installation of XP Pro with SP2, and all patches avaliable on Microsoft Update
  • Complete installation of VS2005
  • Complete installation of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition
  • Downloaded the source package from www.dotnetnuke.com and unpackaged it to "c:\development\dotnetnuke_2"
  • Created a virtual directory in IIS pointing to c:\development\dotnetnuke_2\website
  • Created a new empty database in SQL Server 2005
  • Copied the development.config to web.config and edited this to connect to my newly created database (I have tried to use the release.config also, but with the same results)
  • Set the NTFS security according to recomandation at www.dotnetnuke.com

When I after this tries to open the DotNetNuke.sln from the dotnetnuke_2 directory, then VS2005 crashes.

I have further also tried to create the website through the starterkit avaliable from www.dotnetnuke.com, but the result is the same - when opening the project - VS2005 crashes.

Does anyone have a suggestion to what I'm doing wrong or where the bug might be? When answering please remember that I already have made a clean installation, so there should - at least in theory - not be a problem with the installation of VS2005. This is also confirmed by the fact that it's only the DNN that crashes VS2005, none of my other projects have this effect on VS2005.

Hope that some of you can help me with this.

Thanx in advance,

Audun Dahl

When you say "made a clean installation" was this the first time any Visual Studio was installed?  Apparently the betas could muck things up if not removed in a very specific predetermined order.  For reference : http://blogs.msdn.com/hgao/archive/2005/04/15/408763.aspx

Another (shot in the dark) thing might be to try to get a closer look inside the starter kit template.  Unzip this you might be able to pick something out.  Try to do the template things manually.  Although that might be way to complicated or time-consuming I'll admit.

Hi, thanks for quick answer

By "clean" I mean that i reformated the harddrive, then reinstall OS, and VS2005 directly from my MSDN DVDs - I did this just to eliminate any potential problems with other software or beta-versions of VS2005.

I will try to look into the starter kit, but if there is any other suggestions as well I really appreciate it.
