I'm a newbie here. I downloaded the starter kit (DotNetNuke_04.08.03_StarterKit.vsi), and as soon as I double-clicked it to start the installation, I got this error message:

"One or more content items contained within the .vscontent file cannot be installed because the correct version of the content installer component cannot be found.
Contact the author of the content file for information about which installers and versions are required."

I am running Windows XP SP2. I don't have IIS installed.

Is IIS needed, even for using the starter kit?

If not, does anybody know what the error message might be referring to?

Thanks,
David

no, IIS does not have to be installed. From a quick look @ http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=One+or+more+content+items+contained+within+the+.vscontent+file&meta= , i can see some people have had problems in other starter kits when they didn't have a release version of vs.net /visual web developer installed (i.e. either a beta, or they only had .net 3.5 installed).

I'm using Visual Web Developer 2008, so maybe that's the problem. I've discovered that the .VSI file is just a zip file, and I looked at its contents. The containtained files are coded by the internal .vscontent file as six Visual Studio templates (FileContentType=VSTemplate). Do you know -- does anyone out there know? -- how I might install the content files manually into Visual Web Developer 2008? Thanks again, David

i'm also using vs.net 2008 and it works without a problem. The unpacked files go to 2 different locations on my machine

dotnetnuke.zip goes into C:\Documents and Settings\<my user account>\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual Web Developer\VisualBasic

and module_compiled_vb.zip goes to C:\Documents and Settings\<my user account>\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Templates\ProjectTemplates\VisualBasic\Web

Cathal,

Thanks for your suggestions. I made sure I had all the folders you mentioned, but that didn't help. I also tried looking into the VS content installer and tried a couple of tricks. But my small efforts in that direction didn't pay off, and I don't want to spend much time learning about VSI theory and techniques.

Anyhow, I've been installing and uninstalling junk on my system for a long time, and it's been getting flakier and flakier. Maybe now is the time to start over with a clean install of Win XP. (Groan!!!!)

Then, if that doesn't allow me to install the starter kit, I can always install IIS, forget about the starter kit, and use the full DNN installation package.

Thanks again,
David
