Thanks for the advice. I have followed the instructions for the article below but I have come across some issues with the different paths that you can take. Let me explain:

  • Since I already have a DNN instance on a development server which is already configured and working on our network I would like to use that system. It has enough resources technically and it allows me (and my organization) to keep everything in one place as opposed to everyone running separate instances and having to copy code to the central location. Having said that, I have tried the .NET configuration utility but I receive the same results as before.
  • With the second option you have provided you cannot compile; you can only debug. Debugging works great as provided but is there any way I can compile solutions from a central location using the advice given? I will search online myself but I was wondering if you may have known any from your experience.

Again, thanks for your time and energy.

Hello,

I have followed the DotNetNuke Development Environment Set-up guide step by step and the site runs by itself but when I try to build the site I get 190 errors akin to the following:

Error    1    Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.    \\wts-dbsvr3\c$\Inetpub\wwwroot\controls\urlcontrol.ascx    1

Error    13    Unknown server tag 'dnn:imagecommandcolumn'.    \\wts-dbsvr3\c$\Inetpub\wwwroot\admin\Users\users.ascx    32

Is there something I am doing wrong? Thanks for your time.

i see from the errors that you're opening the project off a network share. I would therefore assume that you don't have sufficent permissions to open and run a project, thats why you're seeing these errors. You can resolve this by granting your user permissions on the network server either via the .Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration tool in your control panel->administrtive tools menu, or else by running caspol (see Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration). Alternatively (and a lot easier), copy the project to your local machine and open it there

Note: some organisations automatically redirect certain folders to network shares e.g. "my documents" may appear to be on your machine but really is on a network machine

Finally, if you're only looking to debug, then you don't need to open the project you just need to have remote debugging enabled and you can hook into the process.

for vs.net 2005 see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910448 , for vs.net 2008 see http://blogs.iis.net/brian-murphy-booth/archive/2008/05/23/remoting-debugging-asp-net-applications-using-visual-studio-2008.aspx

Any updates? Just curious if anyone has ever been able to build the install version from a network share and run it.

Thanks.

I tried it myself.... very occasionally it works with small ASP.NET projects. In the end I gave up and ran projects from the local hard drive, there seems to be no solution here. Of course in a lot of scenarios it's far better to run of a network drive because data gets backed up to the server. In my case I had to work around it by having a batch file run every time I logged out which xcopied the solution.

You are probably right. I'll just work locally and see how that goes.

Thanks to all for the assistance.
