Hello,

I have the above issue that's started after configuring my 2 DNN 4.8.4 boxes as a web farm. I have tried the current beta, and the previous beta. Before the web farm change, AD authentication seemed fine. No issues. As part of a security lockdown i was required to change Password storage from Encrypted to Hashed. As hashed doesnt support password retrieval, i turned that off. I get this error when logging in an AD user, standard authentication users work fine. If i change back to Encrypted and PasswordRetrieval = true, i can login just fine.

Am i configured incorrectly for use of the AD provider? I believe i was working just fine before the web farm change using my previous settings. Occasionally the site will auto-login my account for AD and im in just fine. If i click the login link, switch to AD and try to login i get the error. If i enter an incorrect password, it reports that my password is incorrect.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

I'm going to have to do some research into this as I've never seen it before. Are you getting this error when you try to use Hashed whether it's on a Farm or not? IE: Can it be recreated on a single install?

I'm pretty sure I know where this is happening but fixing it is another matter at this point. There's one part of the code that when a user logs in manually the password they've used is compared to that in the DNN database and updates it if they're different. If you've entered the password wrong then that piece of code isn't going to be hit (you'll already have been kicked out of the login process).

I have another dev box that isnt part of the dev farm. I will try the different settings and see if i can reproduce.

I can reproduce the error on a separate box. I have DNN 4.8.3 stock, with the previous AD provider installed. It has Bring2Mind's Document Exchange trial installed on it, but nothing else. The membership provider was set to Encrypted password storage and PasswordRetrieval = true. I deleted all AD accounts from it, changed it to Hashed and Retrieval = false. I get the same error:

  A critical error has occurred.
This Membership Provider has not been configured to support password retrieval.

If i turn retrieval on, i get the error that it cant retrieve passwords when using Hashed storage or something to that effect.

AD settings are:

Authentication Type: Delegation

Testing with my AD account, pointing at the root domain of the forest.

Many thanks

Thanks David. I'll see what I can find out and if there's a fix.
