It has to be a domain account that has read access to the Active Directory. The reason impersonation is quite often needed is that the NETWORK SERVICE account (or any local computer account) doesn't have access to the domain's Active Directory.

NOTE: I saw your comment in my blog post. You're problem may be slightly different and I just want to make sure of something before we go down the wrong path. The version for DNN 4 will not work with DNN 5 (because of some changes to the database structure) and there's a bug in the 05.00.00 version of the provider that's released with DNN 5. If you look at the top of the Authentication forum there's a pinned post (Active Directory for DNN 5) that has a link to a fixed version of the provider.

This was the fix.

Somthing to think about:

I very much so appriciate your interest in this project and as well your dedication, you might think about posting these comments in the release page.  I find dotnetnuke's forms to be incredibly intrusive.

I am also facing the same error.  I am using DNN 5 with Active directory 5.0.2 .   I have commented out  <identity impersonate="true" /> .

Do i need to comment out <authentication mode="Windows">    </authentication>

But still getting the same error. Anyone please help with impersonation in AD configuration.

Divya, those lines should already be commented out by default. Do you mean you uncommented them?

If you did mean that you uncommented <identity impersonate="true" /> you'll probably have to add a user credential to that line (i.e. <identity impersonate="true" userName="domain\username" password="password" />. Take a look at the documentation available here.
