If the search result hast very long links the layout gets destroyed, because the table get extended.

Is ist possible to short the link or to get a wordwrap?

No idea?

I cannot find an option where to say that instead of the real URL an alternitive text is shown, as for instance the page title.

I'm familiar with your non-wrapping-URL issue as I've tackled it myself but there's no "alt text" option that I'm aware of.

If you want to stick with standard DNN search there are some options.  Two possiblities are:

  1. Create a variant skin to use just on the Search Results page.  In your variation, either alter the HTML/CSS of the primary content pane so that the space is "clipped" on the right edge (will simply cut off non-wrapping text from view) -or- make it a DIV with OVERFLOW set such that content is hidden but you can still scroll (SCROLL-X) the content to see the hidden portion (note: this will add a scrollbar at the bottom of your search results).

  2. Add JavaScript to parse search output to:
    (A) Change links to plain text (so long URL text will wrap ala Google search results)
    (B) Add link titled "Click here to read more..." or an abbreviated version of full link text for users to click

Go GOOGLE

If you're open to other options, there are several advantages (and a few disadvantages) to using the free AJAX-sbased Google Site Search in place of DNN Search.  Advantages include:  text-wrap-friendly URLs (plaintext URLs); showing results "in-page" without forcing users to navigate to a separate "Search Results" page; can configure the search to return results from more than one portal / website; can perform multiple searches at once.  The main disadvantage is that you have to wait longer for Google to index new pages/content than DNN Search (DNN indexes every 30 minutes by default).

You can see a simple example (with code) of replacing DNN Search with Google Search and see a working demo here:  http://googleAJAXsearch.com

After fighting this issue for some time, I decided to just reduce the font size via CSS in the module container - A.CommandButton{ font-size:xx-small;} - but you could just remove it altogether - admin/search/searchResults.ascx.

As a sideline I also stumbled across a tutorial on CSS wrapping which might be useful to other CSS novices like myself

Cheers DC
