Hi all DNN pros

We are looking into rolling out sites that can become very loaded and is trying to figure out in what way to do things. We are currently looking into rolling out sites in Dotnetnuke and then if they get very loaded (+100.000 visitors per day) go towards clustered servers. Does anyone here know if anyone have done a DotNetNuke installation with clustered servers (database) or so? How many visitors does DotNetNuke have today? We don't know if the timeframe DotnetNuke is serving its visitors is fast enough. We would like to know if there is something that can be done to a DotNetNuke installation to serv its content just as fast as Google is servering its search ansvwers?

Hi Johan,

In terms of doing large scale DotNetNuke, it is completely possible to do what you are wanting.  The two biggest DotNetNuke websites that I know of are  C4's http://www.afl.com.au/ (60 servers last I heard - but I'm sure it is more now) and a 100 server internal government app that we (PowerDNN) manage.  The cool thing about these two projects is it shows that DotNetNuke can service big website projects as well as big application projects as well.  In terms of actual users, I'm sure that the AFL gets way over 100,000 visitors per day and with the app that we manage, requires it support 10,000 concurrent users.

In terms of serving fast content, make sure you have a fast network connection, a fast server, and depending how big, multiple distributed servers.

Hi Tony Valenti

This is good info, though http://www.afl.com.au/ is not very impressive in speed. We'd like even quicker response than that. But I guess it is a matter of money like it allways is. How is these 60 servers put in place.... Are there a majority of database servers or are there more of web servers? I'd like to understand this to make some estimates of costs. How and exactly where do they put in the new servers into the previous existing ones?

If I recall correctly from the presentation at openforce last year, the AFL site has over 500,000 visitors a day during peak times, if not approaching 1Million.

Their load times I think are a bit slower simply due to the amount of flash and other graphical elements.

As for the layout of the servers, it really depends on the needs of the applciation, custom modules, etc. and what elements will be stressed.

Hey Johan,
For technical details on the AFL, it would be best to talk to the cfour guys.  Also, in terms of speed, keep in mind that they are located in australia as well.  (I'm not sure where .nu hails out of - sorry.  :( ).  AFL loads really quick for me most the time, but sometimes it seems to take a little bit.  I think that's normal though since I'm in the US and they're in AU.

Anyway, in most designs that we've done, you can usually put 3-4 web servers per SQL server and approximately every 4 or 5 SQL servers, you'll want a cacheing server.  One thing I will stress to you is that if you're wanting to build a large scale DotNetNuke website, you definately want to enlist either cfour or PowerDNN to help you out with that.  A lot of the official documentation on the matter is either lacking or wrong.  Additionally, with the complexities of configuring the hosting environment, it isn't easy.  Of course, if you want to do it yourself, go for it, but I hear that leads to early balding.  :D
