I am looking for a module that does what Microsoft Access is so good at - building forms and reports against SQL tables with a point and click IDE. Whats really important is:
  • the datasource is an existing table in a SQL database (DNN database or remote database). I am not looking for a module that stores its data in a proprietary format. The purpose of the module is to build interfaces for tables that are already designed
  • forms can be designed to view, edit, add and delete records
  • forms can contain links to other forms, e.g. drill through from master to detail
  • the module would be usable by someone who did not have a programming background. They might have to have knowledge of SQL (to build the select, insert, update and delete queries) and HTML (to build the form layout), but the job of getting the interface to handle button clicks (i.e. edit, save, close, add record, delete record, drill through to detail) would be made as easy as possible for them
I know there are a lot of form builder modules that store data in a proprietary format (private tables, XML etc). The closest I have found to my requirements is the ListX module. The only place I found this falls short is in its accessibility to non-programmers. It is an extraordinary module but it seems targetted at the programmer who wants a quicker way to develop an application than coding a module in VB/C#. I am also keeping an eye on epContentBuilder, and DNN Masters Content Builder but both are in development with no sign of if/when they will be released.

Does anyone know of where this holy grail of DNN modules can be found, or have any insider knowledge about epContentBuilder or DNN Masters Content Builder?

We in our company are working on a module like this - starting from a customizable table we are currently adding forms capabilities and will add access to existing tables in the next step.

For a demonstration of the UI have a look at http://www.modulio.net/Default.aspx?tabid=229

There is a module (www.acuitigrids.com) which does some of the stuff you're looking for. It is missing the forms capability (by itself) but can do most of the other stuff you're looking for. Let me know if you're interested in this and I can provide some more information.

The www.acuitigrids.com module looks great for reporting, but like you say it has no data editing capability, which is my #1 requirement. Thanks for sharing this though.

Sebastian - this is exactly what I am looking for! It is the holy grail :)

Congratulations on developing this - the interface is very advanced (compared to the modules I know). I very much like the WYSIWYG grid-based form editor. You have created a very intuitive interface that also provides a lot of control over the design of the form.

I also like the options you have provided for datasources ('virtual' tables which can be shared amongst modules, plus 'real' SQL tables which you say is coming next). Being able to design a virtual table through the module interface is very good if either the user does not know how to create real SQL tables, or the table does not need to exist outside the website.

So, I am sold already .... when are you planning to release this? Will you sell it on Snowcovered? Do you need beta-testers?
