Hello all...
I upgraded my local site to the latest build available, and followed the instructions at the
Mitchell Sellers website which other have used here...very detailed instructions
When I hit the site, it gives me the following error... I know this is pretty generic stuff, but are there any "Usual Suspects" based on the location it specifies?

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.SkinDefaults..ctor(SkinDefaultType DefaultType) +189
DotNetNuke.Common.Globals.get_DefaultSkin() +31
DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetPortalSettings(Int32 TabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +2797
DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings..ctor(Int32 tabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +82
DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) +3303
System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +92
System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +64
Thanks
Harold
This upgrade process seems much more involved then it needs to be...

I've posted the answer to this one several times .. but given that the forum search doesnt work very well, I'm not surprised that the same question keeps coming up.  The answer is:

That error is caused by a missing configuration section in the file DotNetNuke.config (in your top directory).... find it and add this to the bottom of the file:

<skinningdefaults>
<skininfo folder="/DNN-Blue/" default="Horizontal Menu - Fixed Width.ascx" admindefault="Horizontal Menu - Fixed Width.ascx" />
<containerinfo folder="/DNN-Blue/" default="Image Header - Color Background.ascx" admindefault="Image Header - Color Background.ascx" />
</skinningdefaults>

That needs to be added right above the last line, the one that says:

</configuration>

JK.

I wrote a blog post not so long ago that explains exactly why the DNN install/upgrade process is "more involved than it needs to be ... ", and what you can do if you dont really want to or have time to learn all about how to install and setup sql server, iis, .net framework  and etc and etc and etc  .. just so that you can have a website.
