Hey All

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am really struggling, or maybe I am just dumb. If so, then I think there are a lot of other dumb people out there too, as quite a few people seem to be struggling with these installs. This is what I have thus far, from the install guide pdf, and I ain't too sure about that sometimes:

W2K3 Server with Service Pack 1, and IIS installed.

I chose NOT to install ASP.Net 1.1 with IIS, but DID install ASP.Net after IIS was installed via the redistributable package.

IIS has a Virtual Directory configured for DotNetNuke with Read and Scripts and Executables set.

My DNN folder is at C:\DotNetNuke.

SQL 2005 Express has the DotNetNuke Database created.

Now, this is where I run short, and need a tad of help, as I am a bit stupid with this I think.

1) What do I need to do to my Directory to make it work?

2) What do I need to do to SQL 2k5 Exp to make it work?

3) What do I need to do to web.config to make it work?

Any help out there, as the pds has me really foxed?

Thanks to anyone for their time.

Regards

Richard :)

FEAR NOT!!!

You are not stupid.

My experience.......

I'm having similar troubles.

This is the longest it has ever taken me to make the little progress I have  so far on ANY I.T project I have undertaken. (My logic goes if I can role out Outlook Web Access through ISA 2000 with forms based authentication and SSL to SSL bridging using an internal CA and a redirect from http to https then I should be smart enough to set up DNN, if I follow the documentation carefuly.)

But I can't.

I've seen loads of people all having the same issues, and most are directd back to the documentation most fail, some succeed but are usualy unable to tell you exactly what the fix was.

I'm way past renaming the release.config file but thats what most suggest, I usualy then delve deeper into the steps I have taken and the errors i get, then hey presto i'm back on the merry-go round again or I just get plain silence.

Today has been the hardest, I started about 8am and it is about 12:30am now, I've read most of the "Install It!" posts now... and I'm sick of the sight of the install document.

My next move is to give it one more day, and then just move onto something else to occupy me.

All things improve so I may come back in a couple of months, in the hope they've discovered something not covered yet and document it.... who knows.

Let me start this reply be saying I am a noob myself, so new I joined today. I did however manage to get it up and working. Here are a couple of things I saw while figuring this out: Win 2k3 sp1 ---SQL-- 2005 express

1. There was a missing .mdf file under app_data, I was able to google and find the missing file to download

2. Downloaded and installed .net 2.0 rebooted machine, here comes the catch, it did not add it to the web services under IIS 6.0. I had to do this manually and set it to allowed. Once I did that things went smoothly.

3. Dont forget to add Network Service to the Root folder permissions or nothing works.

4. Save a copy of release.config before you rename it to web.config as if you run into any problems I found that deleting web.config and copying in a new one seemed to make things work.

Like I mentioned I am a noob myself and it took some head banging to figure this out, but man its awesome. Now I need to try to redo the install and get it off c:\

Doh!! So why didn't they add that to the document???? A missing file? So the install is not complete then. It would be nice if the Core team could explain this...... is it because of our setup that this happens, or is this really a bug?

Yeah I've done the same uninstalled everything and started over right down to asp sql and IIS. Not too sure what you mean by it did not add it to the web services.... one thing i noticed was that the document states to create a virtual folder, at no point does it say "create application" although in the picture they have clearly taken this step. Could you clarify your web services step.

This one didn't get me, I'm used to changing NTFS permissions for various departments and developers. I think this is pretty standard for web apps that have a worker process.

Again good advice always have a regression plan! I did this too.

Thats what everyone keeps saying.... which is why I don't intend to bin it just yet, I've got to add  that in my boredom I did try the original iBuySpy which is a piece of cake to install. I don't understand why DNN is so much more difficult, I thought things were supposed to get easier?

RE: the missing file

Heres the post that confussed me...

http://forums.asp.net/1193563/ShowPost.aspx

hooligannes97 has consitantly pointed to it being "Somewhere along the way you did not follow the instructions." and I'm sure it is adding to the confusion.

Can someone please clarify these issues.

Does anyone have the specific reason  why I get a missing file error DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\DotNetNuke_template.mdf'.

Is it

a) permissions

b) sql connection string

c) missing /unclear information in the document

d) a missing file.

I'd like a more helpful answer than "RTFM" I thought open source was supposed to be about helping?
