Hello

I experienced a rather dramatic problem with dnn 4.5.5.    I have managed to resolve the problem.

This post started out as an urgent urgent panic post.  However, I've managed to fix the problem, but am clueless as to the cause.

In short, all links from the home page did not work. There was no menu (including Admin menu item).  See below for more detailed list of symtoms.
Ref: http://www.darwin-airport.com.au/

I was able to fix this problem by adding a new page to the site, upon which, all operation resumed as normal.

My best guess is that some database foreign keys/referential integrity was broken but I cannot confirm this.  Adding a new page has reset all of the crooss-references.

My last action against the site was to upload a reasonably large (5Mb) pdf and link it in.  I don't expect this to be the cause.

Can anybody shed some light on this issue?  I'm particularly interested in the cause and preventing it from happening again.

More detailed symptoms:

  • There was no menu, the site map was empty
  • All content links from the home page did not work (the site stays at the home page).  Links to pdf files worked
  • When signed is as admin or host, the admin menu is not available (the host menu is available)
  • The problem was limited to one portal.  Sibling portals are still worked fine
  • When signed in as host the RHS control panel items also did not work (Site, Users, Roles, Files)
  • The LHS control panel (Add, Settings, Delete) did work.  this was how I was able to add a new page and reset the error.

Many Thanks
Ian

this is most likely a hickup of the application which usually can be solved by either restarting it from host settings (if accessible) or by editing web.config and saving the file, which will cause the app to restart. Recycling the IIS app pool would be the 3rd option to restart.

Thanks for your response.  My next step was to restart the service.

I had forgotten about the Host Settings option, and the Web.config to force a recompile.  Both good options too.
