Great tips.

One thing I'd like to add to tip #10.  Tt is possible to add the "executionTimeout" attribute to the <httpRuntime> tag in your web.config to increase the allowable execution time.  The default is 90 seconds but you could always increase to a much higher value.

An example <httpRuntime> tag could look like

<httpRuntime useFullyQualifiedRedirectUrl="true" maxRequestLength="8192" requestLengthDiskThreshold="8192" executionTimeout="600" />

Thanks Make. And of course you are absolutely correct, I just prefer FTP over HTTP for large file uploads.
