My company is getting ready to deploy DNN into production using an architecture that employs several load balanced DNN web servers with a single backend database which will all be located in the DMZ, we also intend to deploy another web server instance within our DMZ that we be used as an authoring server that will have access to our domain controllers for authorization/authentication purposes this authoring server will use the same database as those web servers in the DMZ and will use file replication to keep all servers synced with each other.  The servers in the DMZ will not have access to the domain controllers in our internal network and these servers will never be logged into via the DNN GUI.  My question is will this setup pose any issues, throw any errors or react poorly given that the servers that would not need to authenticate would be able to see a domain controller and only a single server out of the group would actually be able to see the domain controller.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Derek

Wow, good questions Derek and I'm going to have to say.... I don't really know. I suspect logins will fail if the webserver can't communicate with the DC but whether it'll be a graceful fail or a spectacular failure I have no idea. I don't have the ability to replicate your setup and at this point the only way I can think of to test would be to disconnect the network on my dev system and see what happens when I hit the local site with the AD provider installed. Whether that will give us a true representation of your scenario of the DC being unavailable is unknown. I'll try to see if I can't get this tested this afternoon as it should be a quick/dirty thing to do (it'll either work/not work gracefully/not work horribly) but it depends on getting a few minutes to work on it.

I got a moment to do some testing and, surprisingly I was still authenticated to the site (I cleaned out the cookies and cache before hitting the site to be sure).  I'm going to have to step through the code as Tam (the original coder) must have put a fail over in there somewhere for just such an instance.

Either that or I just got lucky.
