As I browse through the great number of free skins and containers out there on the web this morning this idea hit me.   Today I am looking for free containers.  I have a skin that love, but I am wanting a container with a little more "umph".  Unfortunately, most of you skin and container designers out there just show off your skins.  Your skins include containers with them, but you don't emphasize them.

If I may make a suggestion.  Please show off your containers as well.  If you are going to spend time making something you might as well make it available as an individual download right?  I think so!

Anyway, keep up the great work and keep those skins and containers coming!

It appears to me that most containers are designed to go with a specific skin.  I suspect that a site using a mish-mash of containers not specifically designed to go together with the skin would look rather odd.

I think you have a good point.  I know some skin developers do specifically sell just container packs, but most do not seperate them.  I agree also that the design of a container generally compliments the corresponding skin, but I have mixed and matched before as like you said shilbert, sometimes you find a good skin, but like the containers better from another skin package.  As more and more skins come out, these mix and match options will become even greater a possibility.

Hi Stuart - yes you'll find some skins don't have containers.. and for the free skins I do in particular... some have containers and others don't.. mainly due to time constraints.. and the fact I'm not a great fan of them.

Sometimes you can do things to add colour to containers by modifying the content pane css class or even in the module - setting the background colour.

Containers remind me being a ray of sunshine - Use sparingly or you get sunburnt.

I don't use them on my site - instead I use the tabbed aggregator module - which I did skin/colour in css, and maybe in a few places I might put in one container.

But I have used them effectively on some sites that are quite vibrant in colour.

I've got my free XDContainerama pack on my site - but they are basicly a mix of old containers that are converted to work with DNN 2,3 & 4 sites in some instances, you can use the text/html or images module to create some very interesting affects.

Creating containers is something I like less than paying taxes.. I hate them.. *sigh* strong words but we often take more time making a set of containers that function as we would like, as we take making some skins..  But that's just my own personal thoughts and I do confess... I love seeing the way some skins are designed with the good use of containers.

And I appreciate posts like this that gives further insight to what people are looking for and great to see participation like this too.

Interesting, is the reason you dislike containers so much because of all the excess overhead they create, or are there other reasons?  I'm curious to know.  I like the approach you took with some of your skins to design them so that they didn't really need containers.  Nice approach.  Interested in knowing the other reasons you detest containers so much?
