I am upgrading from 4.5 to 4.8. I have downloaded the upgrade package but it seems to have files that will replace my current files, ie web.config and favicon. Please can someone list a set of instructions on how to upgrade?

GG,

Please backup your database and file system first. Entirely - make sure that if your upgrade fails you can start over 100% fresh from the backups.

The upgrade package became a very viable option with the introduction of 4.6.0 - here's some more info on that http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1844/Default.aspx - but for you, since you're on 4.5 - I would use the install package of DotNetNuke.

after you've backed everything up, copy your web.config so you'll have it for easy access.

Overlay the file system with the contents of the package. It is OK to overwrite the existing files. Doing a normal copy/paste in Windows will not delete files that do not exist in the Install package, it will only overwrite existing files with the new versions - which is what we want.

After you have done this - make sure to update the connection strings and the machine key in your web config (reference your previous web.config and update the information from there).

Hope that helps,

Take care,

Ian

I just wanted to say thanks, this thread helped me upgrade my site without it crashing (again). Godaddy seems to be very sensitive and it took about 10 installs for it to work right, and then an upgrade on top of it.

Rock on

Hi GG,

Ian Robinson is right, I think there is an option that you need to upgrade first into 4.6 and then upgrade to 4.8. You need that base installed first so that you are able to upgrade to 4.8.
