I need to know if there is a way to automatically send a weekly email that contains all the new threads opened through the week.

You can write your own addon for the Forum module.  Its the only way at time.

How can I do this? Is there any material to get me started in writing my own add on for the forum module?

You must have Visual Studio 2008/ or 2008 (not Express Ed.) with WAP installed.  You can use the DNN source or Intall package with setting debug to "True" in web.config.  Then you can install the Source Package of the Forum Module  over the module defination.   Some developer instrucktion you can find on this page http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Documentation/DownloadableFiles/tabid/478/Default.aspx.

Some more information like Documentation of the Forum and the Database you can find on www.dnnforums.com .
