Many sites have the characters "search" inside the text field made out of the classic <INPUT type="text"> Html tag ... working with Dotnetnuke there is the special dnn tag <dnn:SEARCH runat="server" id="dnnSEARCH" showWeb="True" showSite="True" />as an interface to this ... the dnn:Search tag has attributes for many things BUT I cannot find a way to set the value of the search field? Does anyone know how to do this?

this is not an option of  the default Search skin object, you will need a 3rd party component instead.

You can do this by editing the search.ascx  in the folder "..\admin\Skins" for the Skinobject and/ or the same for the Module by editing the SearchInput.ascx in the folder "...\admin\Search". Just add  value="TheTextYouWantToSeeByDefaultComesHere" and maybe set the forecolor to red for example. Before you make any changes here, backup both files!

For the Skinobject this look like this:

<asp:TextBox id="txtSearch" value="Vorbelegung..." runat="server" CssClass="NormalTextBox" Columns="20" maxlength="255" enablev13wstat3="False" ForeColor="black"></asp:TextBox>&nbsp;

On my portal http://www.schneider-it.eu  I changed this temporary, so you can see it is possible to do this. However I think this is not very usefull, because the user has to overwrite this default text manually. Maybe this is the reason why there is no feature for such a text by default.

Stephan Schneider
