Do I need to install Visual Web Developer Express or Visual Studio in order to use DotNetNuke? A document I found online said that the choice of one of them for a development environment would determine which installer package of DNN 4 to download and install. And I wasn't sure if they were only needed for more advanced web page/application development, or if DNN would not even install or run without one of them there in the first place.

I am interested in doing dynamic web site development, not stand-alone applications, so I am under the assumption that I would be choosing Visual Web Developer Express if one of those programs was required. My past web development experience has involved using Dreamweaver MX and ASP VBScript.

In order to simply "use" / play with / try out / build a website with DNN, you do NOT need any kind of dev IDE. But if you want to get into module development, then Visual Web Dev Express / Visual Studio are the tools of choice for most people.
