I have 2 servers running mutilple DNN 4.0 portals.  I need to find a way to move the site located at serverone/portal/0 to server2/portal/5. they are on 2 different sql2000 databases. Any suggestions?

Although you could try creating a portal template on the first site, and use that to create (or update with the wizard) the second site, my experiences with that are not too good. A lot of modules (even core ones) have no or faulty support for IExportable, resulting in wrong portal templates. Als moving your portal to another server with another portal id will break links to files, because the file id's will be totally different, and if you linked to files from html modules, the links will be broken because you have a different portal id.

Using the template feature gets you half way there, for the rest its basically a lot of hand work you'll have to do (depending on the size of your portal and the nature of the modules you used).

Cheers,

Erik

Hi - maybe you can advise me with a similar question?!

I have designed a site on my local pc, running DNN4 and SQL Server 2005 Expresss and I'd now like to transfer it onto my web host, running DNN4 and the full SQL Server 2005. What is the best way to do it???

Thanks in advance.

I haven't tested that yet, but you might be able to just copy your complete directory to your server, provided that your db file sits in the app_data directory

Of course you have to make sure that the url of your new site is added as http alias in the site settings, to do that you have to log on as host, and edit the aliasses at the bottom of the admin > site settings page

If copying your db doesn't work, you will have to use some db synchronisation tool. You can use the sql server built in DTS, or you can use external tools, such as red-gate sql bundle.

I would also suggest talking to your hosting company as to how to get your local databasd working with your live db account...

cheers,

erik
