I plan to run my DotNetNuke application on Windows XP Home, which can't run IIS.  So, I had to use the  UltiDev Cassini Web Server – a small redistributable web server capable of running ASP.NET applications without IIS.  I have installed DotNetNuke using the instructions from http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/DNNOnUltiDevCassiniWebSrv.aspx.  I think I installed everyting according to the directions, but when I try to open up Cassini, it tells me that it installed correctly but the integration components for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 were skipped because Visual Studio 2005 was not found in it's regular location on this system.  But, I can still press the yes button on this error message and launch the server application manager.  When I do, I can enter the DotNetNuke application, which appears to have successfully been set up.  But when I try and log in, and click the log in or register links on the page, it says those webpages cannot be found.  So, I'm not really sure if this is related to the error message I received or how to procede if it will not allow me to log in as either the admin or host.

Please help me if you can.  I bought a book that isn't helping at all and I've tried to re-install it three times.  As you might have guessed, I am new to this type of thing.

Hi Jeff and all else!

The first error message when I open Cassini Web Server is a pop-up box that is titled:  UltiDev Cassini Web Server for Visual Studio 2005 Developers.

It says, "UltiDev Cassini Web Server for ASP.NET 2.0 was installed successfully.  Installation of UltiDev Cassini integration components for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 was skipped because Visual Studio 2005 was not found in its regular location on this system.  Please press YES button to launch UltiDev Cassini Web Server Explorer application manageme...

And then there are Yes and No boxes to click on at the bottom of the box.

The error page that comes up when I try to reach the log-in page or register page for my DotNetNuke website is pasted below:

The webpage cannot be found

 HTTP 404

Most likely causes:

  • There might be a typing error in the address.
  • If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date.

What you can try:

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

Go to  and look for the information you want.

I was having the same problem with my DNN 5 on UltiDev Cassini.  I tried using the DNN web.config setting, <add key="UsePortNumber" value="true"/>, but switching to true broke even the homepage.  Without the setting, I got the home page, but DNN broke when clicking Home, Login or Register links.

I finally just configured the DNN application under Cassini to run on port 80, which works.  Apparently DNN still can't handle non-standard ports correctly.  I don't think it's Cassini, since I can successfully run other ASP.NET apps such as CruiseControl.Net and BugTracker.Net on different ports under Cassini.
