You'll need the true alias if you want your site to work. IF you're making changes to the PortalAlias table and not seeing them on the site be sure to reset the site after making those changes in the DB, the aliases are all cached.

I'm trying to do something similar with my setup, I'm trying to create a new site (http://64.85.8.118) which is eventually going to replace an existing one (www.OttawaCommunity.net). My problem is, I only have an IP for the new site I'm creating (64.85.8.118) and I won't repoint the DNS entry for the OttawaCommunity.net until the new site it completely configured and working. Right now, I deleted the PortalAlias row and I'm getting errors. How/what do I need to do in order to make DNN accessible via the IP until I can get it working to repoint the DNS over. Thanks for your time.

You should be able to setup an alias for 64.85.8.118 and use that until you port over to the live site.  If you're using some other URL to get to that server, you should use that (i.e. test.OttawaCommunity.net or something like that) instead of the IP.  Once you can access the site with that address, add an alias for OttawaCommunity.net, to prepare you for when you go live.

Once you setup your portal alias in the database, restart the site so that your changes will take effect.

Hope that helps,

We have been building our dnn site on the web under dev.website.com. We are ready to replace our existing site www.website.com . Do I just need to add www.website.com to the portal alias and point the nameserver? The main site needs to be the www... Will this keep our existing search engine rankings? Thanks for any help, Christian

Yes, you should just add www.website.com as a portal alias, and then point www.website.com to your DNN site's server.  Your existing search engine rankings will apply to your new site (though any old links that don't work anymore could cause your rankings to decrease).

Hope that helps,
