I was wondering if anyone has had experience implementing COPPA compliance in DNN? We're going to have to implement it soon, I was hoping to get some thoughts and experiences from anyone who has dealt with it in DNN. Thanks.

Hey Patrick ~

If I understand COPPA correctly, it only applies to websites that have actual knowledge that registrants are under age 13 -or- in which content is specifically geared toward children (subject to FCC scrutiny).  I presume you fall under the latter category.

There is nothing built into the default configuration which would aid with this.  Customizable user profiles will obviously help you with specific data collection, but won't help you with the requirements for parental notification and consent.  There are some nice third party applications for custom registration that provide for event driven actions (e.g. DataSprings Dynamic Registration) that might fit the bill.

Be interesting to hear from someone who has implemented a COPPA compliant solution.  Good luck!

Cheers

I suspect that running fan sites for The Jonas Brothers (www.jonasbrothersfan.com) and Miley Cyrus (mileycyrus.fangap.com) woudl fall under the "content geared toward children" clause, unless there is something you're not telling us about your musical tastes Scott.

Hi Patrick,

Do you actually intend to solicit information from children aged less than 13, or maintain accounts for users of this type?  The implementation details will vary significantly depending on the answer to this question.  Perhaps intuitively, a "no" requires much less development effort.

Isn't everyone a Jonas Brothers fan? At least in my house they are.

Right now we're looking into the legal issues, I think once you start to use information for marketing then you have to deal with COPPA. I'll let the attorney deal with that.

I think I saw the dynamic registration module before, I'll check it out. We're just starting to get into COPPA, so it's all a learning experience from here.
