I am an aspiring module developer/seller.

I have read the "adefwebserver" tutorials and they have given me a great primer on custom module development. What would be nice, is if one of the custom developers who makes a living off of selling their modules, would chime in and share do's and dont's that they have learned over the years.

Are any of you using LINQ to SQL for your sellable modules?

What about a nice tutorial on versioning and standard practices for offering customers upgrades, prices, etc.

Any input would help, thanks!

Matt,

core modules might provide best practices, how to use core features and provide upgrades. Besides, there are 2 well known selling platforms, Marketplace.dotnetnuke.com and snowcovered.com, you might check out to get an idea about pricing and licensing.

Matt,

This is a very complex process to truly document.  I use a specific format myself, but it is all personal preference.  As of right now I do not see LINQ being used very much due to the number of web.config changes that are required to actually allow its use.  I'm sure that it will change in future DNN releases, but it isn't something that you will see right now.

I'm actually working on trying to get some of this content into my book "Professional DotNetNuke 5 Module Programming", but even for that I'm not 100% sure on the "best" way to do it.

For pricing, it is another item that really depends on your target audience, and the functionality provided.  Keep in mind that a big portion (25% for SnowCovered) of the price is taken as a commission by the hosting sites.

Thanks for the replies guys...

Mitch, as for your up and coming book, I would be willing to bet I'm not the only one who would greatly benefit from hearing your preferences/processes for building sellable modules. I personally don't care if some of your practices aren't "best practices"...   just hearing YOUR way of doing something; coming from someone who is a success in this industry, would be priceless to a beginner.

- How you setup your dev/source control environment?
- Starter templates or code gen tools to speed up DAL development?
- How to handle version numbers and upgrades?
- Anything on the business side that needs to get setup before selling (invoices, company name, branding, refund policy, etc.)
- Customer support

Thanks,
Matt
