Say I have multiple companies all with their own portals on a single DNN instance. Company 2 screws up some content and wants a backup and restore done of their portal. You don't want to screw up any changes done by other companies since this backup. How do you accomplish this? A standard SQL backup and restore does the entire database, how do you just do a single portal?

Dotnetnuke stores all of the portals information in one set of tables.   So something from Portal 0, will sit right next to something from Portal 1.  Therefore, if you need to perform this sort of thing you will need to either mount an entire backup and use SQL to fish out the portals information you are looking for.  Or you need to get a backup solution that will allow you to restore sql row by row rather than on a whole database or transaction.

AFAIR there used to be a 3rd party solution from Evoviva for this purpose, but I never tried it. Have a look at the Marketplace or Snowcovered.

As mentioned this is NOT an easy task, and even the SQL method is a bit risky, and you REALLY have to know your way around the database and related elements to get it working 100%.

Personally if this is a concern, I would use separate installations for each client.  I ONLY share DNN installations for single clients for this reason only.  If I have 1 client that needs 2 sites I'll do it as a multi portal solution, but that is it.

As Sebastian mentions there may b e a third party module out there that can do it, but I am NOT 100% sure on that.  And I would HIGHLY reccomend that you test it multiple times BEFORE relying on it.

I started with one DNN installation for couple of sites. But only a year after I moved the contents to it's own DNN installation.
This because of this backup/restore situation.
