I 100% guarantee you can still have many, many DNN installations on a single server even with 5.6. So, yes, it is very likely that you did something wrong.

Where I work, we have 3 "hosting" servers which handle the actual DNN installs, and one very beefy SQL server to handle all the databases. I'd say we currently have ~100+ DNN-based sites across the several servers.
