After much experimentation with connection strings (using SQL 2005 express on Windows XP), I found a working configuration.  However, only version 4.8.2 is working correctly after being installed. Versions 4.8.3 and 4.8.3 seem to install ok and I can log in as host, but the icon images and style elements are all missing.

Any suggestions for what is wrong?

If you can install 4.8.2, I think there is no mistake about your DNN setup steps. Because you use XP system, you should not try to login two DNN website on the same computer, you should logout one then login another. In the sametime, IIS on XP has connection limit, this is the reason why your images and styles are missing, you can close some IE or Firefox windows(tabs) if you open more than one DNN website in the sametime.

Thanks,

I did not consider the connection limit or trying to view it from another machine. I might try that sometime.

But I found a resolution for the image display problem which seems to work.

1) Stop the Default Website

2) Relocate the DotNetNuke folder to another location on the hard drive

3) Reset permissions on the folder.

4) Change the path in the IIS virtual directory so it points again to the DotNetNuke folder.

5) Start the default website again.

I do not know why, but this fixes it everytime.

Anway, you reboot you IIS and DNN through those steps. I think insert some blank spaces into web.config to force DNN rebuild also can fix this problem.
