Ok...it's fixed. 

Ran the HTML through the W3C validator and found it didn't like the HTML combination of "<P><TABLE>....</TABLE></P>".  Old HTML added from the previous editor (just upgraded from 4.3 to 4.8 a week ago).  Removed the extra paragraph tags and, bada bing, now it's happy.

Still don't understand why FCKEditor would misbehave so badly just because of a little HTML syntax faux pas.
