Hi all,

I have a rather complicated problem involving a shopping cart and adding books to it.  Theres a lot to take in but i'll try and keep it as simple as poss.

  • For my company i have produced a search function that searches Amazons book collection, from the UK
  • The list of books is generated in a class called ItemBox which when asked returns a string containing the html, tables, etc to display the list of books
  • Each item has a hyperlink called 'Add to Cart'
  • On top of the list you can click view details which will display a details page with another 'add to cart' button (again a hyperlink)
  • There is another module displayed on the same page called Cart, this needs to displays what the customer has selected (well obviously)
  • Cart will also be on other pages

Ok so thats the situation, what i want to be able to do is add what ever i click to a session that the cart will use when it loads.  On top of that it needs to add the item straight away without a page reload to the cart (i'm thinking AJAX).

Now the problem I face is creating the session when I click the link.  I tried using asp:linkbuttons but as the results are returned from another class the buttons are rendered after everything else and so can't be used to run a c# method within that page.  I tried making the links run a javacsript method but i'm not sure where to go from there.  Can javascript start a session?

One more thing, this has to all happen without a user login.

Hope that makes sense.  ANY help would be awesome as I've spent the last 2 hours on this problem and really dont want to have to rewrite how the results are displayed just so i can use asp:linkbuttons

Cheers

Si
