I'm using the AspNetSqlMembershipProvider with default settings and one of my clients in their testing has raised an issue with the message:-

The password specified is invalid. Please specify a valid password. Passwords must be at least 7 characters in length and contain at least 0 non-alphanumeric characters.

1) will existing passwords be rejected or need to be changed in order to access the site

2) can I make the change portal specific or does it have to be site wide?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Caroig,

I do not believe that existing passwords will be affected in any way with changes to the web.config-based password strength requirements for the AspNetSqlMembershipProvider.

Although it is theoretically possible to require that a password for a particular portal be stronger than the minimums specified in the web.config, this is not something that DNN supports at this time (to my knowledge).  As such, password strength remains a site-wide setting.

Hope this helps!

Brandon

I just wrote a blog entry on how to change the password requirements:

Thanks for the information guys.

I run several multi-portal sites and as my customers get more sophisticated I'm beginning to realise the drawbacks of this approach with Dotnetnuke.

Using something like Dynamic Registration from Data Springs will allow you to specify these sort of things at each site level.  I have been using the evaluation version of the module and it is pretty neat.
