Okay, so here's what I'm trying to do:

I want users to be able to search information on my site with specific filters they can access from drop down menus.

For instance, I'd like users to be able to filter returns based on their learning level (beginner, intermediate, advanced), their learning preference (written material, audio, video) and perhaps a few other screens.

The product information is stored in text/html modules, one module per product.

Is there a way to do this?  I'm befuddled as to whether this is a search function or a query function.

Further, I am definitely not a programmer by trade.  If there is a module out there that will help me do this quickly and easily, I would very much appreciate the guidance!

Thanks very much & have an awesome day!!

it will get difficult, if you use multiple modules for products, usually only a product catalog can provide structured information and grant the option of extended search. You might have a look at Search in UserDefinedTable, Repository or any of the available 3rd party modules, e.g. Property Agent from www.ventrian.com

Sebastian, thank you.  A couple of points for clarification:

(1) Is this a search or a query?

(2) The reason I didn't use the catalog is that this will be an affiliate site (i.e., we're sending referrals to the ultimate product manufacturer/ seller).  I would have preferred to use the catalog methodology (much cleaner), but I couldn't figure out how to do that when we were not the shippers/ sellers.

We do have time before launch... I wonder, is there a catalog functionality that works well for an affiliate type site?

(1) it is a query (as far as I understand English language), but I do not see a chance to search for attributes, which are either assigned by ID or free text, with misspelling or synonyms.

(2) I do not get the point, why this is depending on your position. The main problem will be the number of items and the effort to add an item to your site. I am not convinced, that a free text will be easier (i) to enter and (ii) for users to retrieve

I need more background info, to answer your last question.

Sebastian, thanks.

To question number 2.  When I say this will be an affiliate site, here's what I mean:

(1) I will post product information with a special link for users to click in order to buy the product

(2) The special link will have an ID that will identify me as a referrer -- like the Amazon affiliate program

(3) Not all product links will go to the same place -- some may go to Amazon, others to other sellers, all with a special id that indicates I referred the buyer, thus creating a commission.

As best I can tell, a catalogue module (at least, the DNN one), assumes that users are purchasing product directly from me, the site host.  Is there a method to use the catalogue module and still refer users to other websites for purchase?

I am also not convinced that a free text (text/html module) is the best solution... it just happened to be the one that would allow for the affiliate linking described above.

Does that make more sense?
