I have read that google treats url.com/home.aspx as a different page for page ranking than just url.com

Is this true? My Analytics and Web Master Tools both report on just my url without the "home.aspx" part. Does it make any difference when I blog or advertise my web site if I use the "home.aspx" part in the link or just use url.com?

Thank you!

Yes, in the eyes of search engines, url.com and url.com/home.aspx are 2 seperate resources even though they are technically the same page. The proper way to handle this is to 301 redirect url.com/home.aspx to url.com (aka canonicalization.) More info here and here.

Hi Tom,

Below are the results from 'Live HTTP Headers". They do not seem quite right to me.

Based on the articles it seems like I should have everything pointing to http://www.goldenhillsrealty.com but that does not seem to be the case. I am using PageBlaster. Once I get this fixed I assume that any links to my home page, external or internal, should point to http://www.goldenhillsrealty.com with a 301 redirect. Is that correct?

Thank You,

Charlie

Here are the results from 'Live HTTP Headers" (all serve up the home page):

http://goldenhillsrealty.com
200 ok

http://goldenhillsrealty.com/home.aspx
200 ok

http://www.goldenhillsrealty.com
301 - http://www.goldenhillsrealty.com/home.aspx

http://www.goldenhillsrealty.com/home.aspx
200 ok

That's correct, everything should be 301 redirecting to http://www.goldenhillsrealty.com. I'm not that familiar with the latest version of PB, but I don't think it will help you with that. I suggest you look at Url Master instead.

Hi Tom,

After spending a number of hours researching and trying things out here is what I did:

I upgraded my iFinity.FriendlyUrlProvider.dll to version 4.07, which since his recent re-write, gives it some of the Url Master capabilities. According to Bruce's blogs, without access to the IIS settings on the server, which I can not change since I am hosted, I can not use either of these modules for canonicalization. I tried this anyway, since I do not know what the server settings are, and it failed, so I assume this is correct. However, as an unexpected side effect of upgrading, I did not get the 301 redirect for my base url as I had previously. In fact all the above examples gave me a returned code of 200. This was obviously huge, since I do not of a way to do this without changing the host settings. Since I am using PageBlaster, which makes an amazing difference by the way, I tried using their re-writing capabilities to redirect the other 3 urls to my base home page. It Worked!!! I don't really understand why the Friendly Url upgrade did what it did, so I hope this does not come back to haunt me later but it seems to be working correctly now.

Thanks for all your help. Now I am off to remove the "home.aspx" from all my profiles and external links I have out there...

Charlie
