I just spent about 5 hours searching the net, dnn.com, and asp.net forums for a solution to my problem and never found one.  The problem is in setting up a private forum, using dnn 4.0.2 and the forum module 3.20.01.

I set the appropriate permission to edit the module.  However, when I went to set "Authorized Roles" and "Authorized Edit Roles" nothing would happen when I clicked the folder icon that is supposed to give me the popup to choose roles.  I tried this in Firefox (my preferred browser) as well as Internet Exploder, to no avail.

I went into the remote administration of my hosting provider's sql server, and looked through the tables a bit, and was able to add a forumid and roleid to the forum_privateforums table.  After that, I was able to get the popup but was not able to get the popup window to populate.  None of the buttons would do anything.

In attempting to open the site in an IE Tab, firefox crashed, so I reopened.  This time I was able to get the popups in the IE Tab, and they worked.  I was then able to finish setting up the permissions that I'd wanted, using IE.  However, When I went back to Firefox, I found that the popup was still non-functional.

Since I spent so much time on this problem, and I'm sure I'm not the only firefox user who is interested in dnn, I thought I would post this in the hopes that it would help someone else.

Since it was 0:dark:30 in the morning when I wrote this, it now occurs to me that it may not be perfectly clear, so let me add that the problem seems to lie with an incompatibility of the popup window with Firefox.  Once I added the row to the Forums_PrivateForums table, everything else seemed to work properly within Internet Exploder, but the popup window would be completely non-functional in Firefox.  Also of note is the fact that I completely disabled all popup blockers during this process, so it was not a problem caused by that.

Hope this helps someone.

Hey there hopmedic,

Yeah that's a known problem with the popup but I think it's been reported more in the forums as a problem using the search feature.  Crispy and his team have removed the pop up and replaced it with something else in the next release version.

In the mean time you can click on the dropdown selector and then use the arrow keys to make selections but it still has problems with firefox for now.

I am having this problem also, I am using DNN 3.1.0, but I get alot of javascript errors
I cannot see a dropdown selector to use as an alternative, is this a later DNN feature or am I missing something.

It's the dropdown selector in the popup window.  You need to be using IE6 as the popup doesn't if you are using Firefox. I don't know about other browsers.

What kind of JavaScript errors are you getting?  Do you have JavaScript enabled in your browser?
