Hi Fellow DNN experts - I'm in need of some help here...

Last week I installed some new modules in preperation of migrating from my old .ASP web site to the new DNN web site. As such, I installed a few performance modules like DNN SEO Pack and Snapsis PageBlaster. With the revised URL re-writes coupled with the heavy caching/compression, I found that several pages that utilized forms (e.g. formMaster pages), were not responding correctly due to caching.

I went into the Host Settings to change the DNN performance setting from Heavy Caching to Light Caching (explaining this from memory). When I submitted, the web site hung. I then rebooted the webserver.

Since then, the entire site will not load at all. When trying to browse to the web site, I get a .NET error stating that the site has timed out. On rare occasion, the web page will load, but any subsequent clicks or attempts to log in will simply end up with a .NET timeout message.

What I'm seeing on the server, is that whenever I try to browse to the DNN web site, the WPW3.exe worker process spikes to 60% or so of the CPU, and this also forces SQL to rise. The result is that WPW3 and SQL will consume 100% of the CPU and the site is completely down. I had a dba check SQL and all is checking out just fine (indexes are good, etc.)

I'm looking for some suggestions to get my site back up so that I can at least log in and check some settings. An idea I had was to disable a few modules, such as Snapsis and DNN SEO. Since I can't get to the web site, do I ahve any options like:
1) Is there a way to load up the DNN site in a "safe mode"? (I know... I'm probably reaching pretty far on this one)
2) Is there a way to disable or uninstall modules without the DNN UI?

I'd prefer not to just nuke it and start all over again if at all possible.

I'm in a bit of a pinch here, so I'd apprecaite any help I can get.

Thanks,

Rick

First thing you try is commenting out anything in the web.config related to those modules.  And clear your event log, it might be full, causing sql timeouts.  Use sql management studio to run this query "truncate table eventlog"

JK.

Hey Rich,

Please email me your phone number and I'll give you a call so we can work this out with you.  My email address is Tony.Valenti@PowerDNN.com and my phone number is 402-650-6072.  My phone is low on batteries so if you call me, I doubt I'll get it, but if you can email me your phone number, I can Skype phone you yet tonight.

Thanks JK - I went into the web.config last night and commented out narly every purchased module, with no effect. I checked the event log as well for the exact same reasons and there were only about 100 entries (probably not even that many). I also have a maintenance plan on SQL server to truncate the logs every 2 weeks, etc. I do appreciate the pointers, and at least I know a rookie/tech moron like myself is at least checking the things that experts like you are suggesting so far. :)

One other thing I noticed last night, that I'm hopeful that this will help...

1) I open a browser and head to the DNN site.
2) W3WP.exe spools up to roughly 50%
3) SQL immediately follows suit (within 1/4 second or so)
4) I get a handful of waits on SQL "select * from dbo.vw_Tabs Where"... (each one is sometimes different, but always starts with select * from dbo.vw_Tabs")
5) As soon as the page times out (or on rare occassion it does display after 2 or 3 minutes), SQL and W3WP processes drop back down to zero (or near zero).

So my assumption is that something from DNN is calling something in the db and waiting for a large resultset. However, all of the indexes and execution plans are in good shape according to my dba.

Make sense?

Rick

Hi Folks - here's an updated. It turned out that the problem was with a setting change I made in the host settings, where I unknowingly set the Performance Setting to No Caching. This caused SQL to spin out of control (obviously).

A BIG thanks to the great folks at PowerDNN. Within just a few minutes they were able to diagnose the problem and have it fixed. Thank you very much!

Thanks to everyone else for the other suggestions too - as always, it's greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Rick
