or...more specifically "A critical error has occured. Object reference not set to an instance of an object." error when the Login link is clicked for a new parent portal.

The original portal works fine.

The site's running at an ISP so I don't have access to Event Logs.

Any suggestions?

did you try to restart the application already (from Host settings) ?

Does the dotnetnuke event log (access from Host Portals, enter portal, go to EcentLog in Admin menu) provide details?

Sebastian,

re: restart

Yep.  That's the first thing i tried.

re: EventLog.

Can't tell...Can't log in as the admin!

I did query the SiteLog table.  There's three entries:

Referrer URL
  http://www.mysite.com/Default.aspx
http://www.mysite.com http://www.mysite.com/Default.aspx
http://www.mysite.com http://www.mysite.com/Default.aspx??tabid=81&error=Object+reference+not+set+to+an+instance+of+an+object

Maybe a little more background would help.

This installation is a little over a year old and when through a 4.6 to 4.8.4 upgraded a few months ago with no problems.  There has only been one portal until now.  The original portal works fine.  I can log in as host, admin, and any other user that's been added.  The above problem happens when on a new portal.

One thing I should have mentioned originally (my bad) -- adding the portal itself has been problematic.  I got a "Sys.Webforms.PageRequestManager.TimeoutException: the server request timed out." error after clicking the Create Portal link.  So it sounds like something didn't get finished.

Thanks for the help!

Ok...it got a bit weird but I found a workaround.

After doing a bit or research, I figured that the Add Portal was throwing an AJAX time out error ("TimeoutException").  Since I can't find or don't have access to the <ScriptManager> tag so I can change the AsyncPostBackTimeout property, I looked for another solution.  I found it by turning off Ajax in Host Settings.

I tried adding the portal again and, after a very long wait (approx 2 min) I got a blank page.  Doing a refresh threw a "you can't add the same portal twice' error.

Going to Portals page showed two instances of the new portal, one with an alias and one without.  I deleted the one without and was able to successfully log into the first.

So...I solved my own problem, but, it'd be nice to figure out how to change the timeout so I can use AJAX.

Anyone with an idea?
