Can someone please call me.
I am being billed by a web designer for dnn and it's $40 a month.  I can't figure out why he is charging me that amount when dnn is a lot better deal.  We had one meeting where he showed me some intro stuff to create my own site on DNN. He is a good guy, and I would like to trust him but how do I know? He says he has modified the Portal for my site??? but how can I tell why it is now worth $40/mo. ?? And I still have to do all the work to learn to build it!!  Please look at my crappy website and call me about whether I should subscribe directly to dnn with out the upcharge this guy that hasn't done anything and wants me to buy dnn for dummies. and he's charging me $40 a month for dnn.
Please help,
Why can't I call DNN?? jeez.

I would assume he's billing you $40 a month for hosting, which for asp.net hosting with support is probably not as bad deal.

Just because there is not "cost" to DNN, does not mean that it is free to have a business website up and running. There are numerous costs involved. Hosting, custom development, implementation, design, and many other potential costs.

As Chris mentioned depending on the services offered by your designer, those rates MIGHT not be too far out of line, as long as you are getting something more than just standard shared hosting out of the deal.

If you want to talk the specifics about your situation, and would like advice on what to do.  Feel free to e-mail me at msellers@iowacomputergurus.com and I can help you as much as possible to identify your options.

Hi

All seems OK to me, but if you are concerned then move your site to your own hosting company.  By the way your Dnn website is using the Tyler Fawcett skin which costs $89, so that might be some of the cost

Did you ask him?

Did you buy a support contract?  If so, you can call them.  If not, there's no number available.  If you'd like one, see the Marketplace in the menu at the top of the page.

Your basic problem seems to be a misunderstanding of what DNN is.  It's not a service, it's not a commercial web company and it's not a host or design service.  It's a portal framework, code, that developers can use to create a web site.  Such as the one it appears you purchased.
