Sorry this is only loosely related to original post. But in tough economic times cities look for less expensive alternatives too. DNN was an easy sell in our approval process due to its expansive capabilities and open source price tag :)

Excellent. I was always curious to see other govt dnn sites. ours is Manchester NH www.manchesternh.gov and Nashua NH recently launched theirs as well www.gonashua.com . It might be worth while creating a local govt users group. Just a thought, I'll end it there as I don't want to steer this thread in a direction that it was not intended. I can always be contacted through our web site under the message category of "other".

Thanks
Mike

3) Its main use has been internet CMS. It would be good to have some case studies of use in other problem domains like document management, business process automation etc. where business opportunities might exist.

What I use DNN for is building sites for business process automation.

I have 2 main sites I do this for (had a couple others, but there were better solutions for them). I do a website for a Mortgage Bank which streamlines thier payroll system. It's main purpose is the payroll, but it's becoming much more of a HR andReport tool as we build modules to fit needs they find.

The second one is a Credit Repair company. We built a site so they could do nearly everything digitally, increasing their productivity and accuracy.

I just thought I'd throw in that I do business process automation in my work. :)

I use DNN for it because it's a fantastic framework. I don't have to worry about writing security (roles, SSL), making pages... My focus is entirely on getting new tools up for the client to use.

The '90's downturn was barely a blip on the rough times scope.

The late '70's recession was much, much worse and I'm afraid that this one is going to end up making the '70's one look like a blip. This one is probably going to be somewhere inbetween the late '70's and the depression. We still have one financial bubble yet to burst - credit card debt and we still have two factors yet to even start being seen/felt - inflation and the value of the dollar.

For some very interesting reading - Techcrunch got their hands on a Powerpoint presentation made by Sequia Capital (A venture capital firm) for a meeting that they had with the companies they've invested in.  A very good read!

With regards to the original post - yes I think this recession might be the biggest aid to open source it has seen yet. What will be interesting is to see is the position of power many open source projects may be in when the dust finally settles in a few years!  Also interesting to see will be the possibility of the open source model being applied to non-IT things - I think we may see an explosion here too.

Hi Baatezu,

This is very interesting... Thanks for the post.

How are you implementing the workflow stuff?

Also thanks to Michael Washington's interesting post and work.

This is all very relevant in order to potentially offer a DDN solution during these testing times.

Sam
