Last night I was exeprienceing problems with a 3rd party module so decided I would simply uninstall it and load the next release.  The uninstall did not bring me back to the host page but instead timed out.  When I went to the main page of the portal it also timed out.  So I went to the local server to see if I could get some exception info and all I got was "HttpException (0x80004005): Request timed out.]
I also see the below in the server event log.

I then upgraded from from DNN 4.8 to 4.9 in what I thought would be just a waste of time but it worked.  All my previous modules were still active and functional minus the one I uninstalled.  That's when I got greedy and tried to load the recently uninstalled module.  The install failed stating that the install could not create the desktopmodule folder.  The site again started timing out and that is where I am stuck.

I have tried upgrading again, removing dlls (per the module vendors suggetion)  and even doing a fresh install of 4.9 DNN and setting the connection string to my old database.  It continues to time out with the same error.  I guess this points me to some kind of IIS or ASP.Net problem, right?

I know it's not much to go on but this is production portal for over 300 people that use it everyday.  I will try anything at this point.

Thanks,

Peter

Peter,

obviously you missed rule 1 of any upgrade or install action: backup your site and database!!!!

Make sure to step back to a situation, where database and filesystem had been in sync. remove the .dll file of the lately added module and restart IIS. Verify, that the machinekey in your web.config has not been changed.

If there is still an error, you might need to clear the event log and truncate database transaction log.

Good luck!

Sebastian Leupold
