I am pleased to announce initial availability of a Linq to Sql model adapter for the DotNetNuke framework.

For those that are not aware, Linq to Sql was -- until now -- not usable within a module targeted to wide release, because of issues with runtime-configured database owner and object qualifier.  This adapter removes this limitation, allowing developers to leverage the advantages of Linq to Sql while being assured that it will continue to function properly regardless of DotNetNuke configuration.

Configuring a set of Linq to Sql classes is quite straightforward, requiring only a change in DataContext base class.  Performance is not significantly affected.

Visit the project homepage on CodePlex here.  For implementation instructions, I have a blog entry on the topic here.  For those interested in implementation details, I discuss them in a little more detail here.  Source is available for internal consumption.

Hope this helps anyone designing modules for distribution.  Thanks to Michael Washington for his assistance in testing.

Hi,

As a complement to your solution, we illustrate a similar adapter to LLBLGen Pro in our free Discussion module derived from the former core module. It inherits as conventional DataAccessAdapter and provide overrides accounting for custom catalog, Dbowner and ObjectQualifier.

Sounds like DNN is coping well with Linq and ORM techs after all. Hopefully we can see a full Data agnostic DataProvider implementation some time during 2009. That's about 15000 lines of sproc to objectify though, yet I reckon it's worth the effort since that would open wide the road to Mono. Next race to Linux ?

Appreciate the compliment, Mitch.  Early feedback indicates that it is working well in the wild; I have now been using it in production for a couple weeks.
