I just wanted to be able to test DNN4 to see if it will do what my organisation needs.  I finally got it installed here at my local WinXP PC with SQLexpress.  I keep coming across stumbling blocks though. 

Firstly, i have not found any documentation that tells you just what to do once the entire system is installed.  No best practices, nothing to tell me to log in as Host and how to start creating my portals.

I think i have figured the portals portion out, however, since i do not have a SMTP server on my system, i cannot create portals?

I have deleted/rebuilt the db several times, but i never get any of the default modules available to me.  The only ones that seem to install are the Account Logn, Banners, Search Input, Search Results and User Accounts?

I'm just wqondering if there are ways to get around these issues, or i should just pay a hosting company to handle all the above for me and just try and get reimbursed by my company later on?

Hi.  I'm running DNN 3.2.2, not 4.x.  However, according to the experts, the interface and functions between 3.2.2 and 4.x are nearly identical.  Therefore, if you are interested in the "mechanics" or "best practices" for setting up and administering a DNN site, you will get some value from either of the books that cover 3.x.  I used both of the following books to get going, and they both are excellent:

Thx to everyone who responded, i will check out the books.  Just one question before i go, CAN I test the portals if i am not running any kind of mail server?  Even just the mail service?

Well your one step ahead of me , as of yet I have been unable to successfully run it locally unless exicuting through VWD.
