This is not possible. There's a project on the run that will allow dnn to run on Firebird, and I think mysql is the next target. But don't expect this to happen in the sort term.

Was Access support really dropped in DNN 3.x? Why? Did Access didn't have all the functionality?

I cannot afford SQL Server, and I really don't like the idea of having to download additional "things" (Firebird, MySQL) just to get DNN to work. All Windows PCs have Access support and able to create Access databases, even without MS Access installed.

Actually Access support was removed after 2.12. It was taking a substantial amount of time to develop the access end (as their version of sql is less powerful than t-sql, and harder to develop and degug), which was impacting the project overall. A 3rd party company agreed to take on the access provider, and release future free opensource versions, but sadly they never delivered on their promise, and went out of business. Theres not been a huge amount of demand for it's reintroduction, more people have been interested in mysql/firebird and the other opensource database's which is why some effort is being made in those areas.
