I once built a website for my friend using DNN 4.8.6 on 100Mhz Processing power and max 64mb ram on w3k iis 6 shared server with at least 100 website on it. mssql express on other server. The website was down when around 15 users logged in simulatanously...should be ok as that is the time when his website is down.

Given assumption that An average of 1000 divided by 60, round up as 20 simutanous visitors per minutes, staying for 15 minutes, that will be 300 simutanously connections. I would also suggest seperate out the database especially if your're using mssql entreprise / mssql 2008.  Btw, mssql Express still can handle that kind of volume, and it consume far less memory and processing power than the other version.

I believe that the most economic and should practice way is to add when you needed. There's no need to start a server with direct 4GB of ram for example, cuz you hardly will directly get that much of traffic if it is a new website. While if you are migrating a large site to dnn, then you should have the reference from previous visitors behavior and adjust it accordingly. I believe if you're renting a dedicated server, a hot plugin service is available for most of hosting provider.

If you're using you own server, why don't install some simulator / Server Stress Tools to test the performance?

George

Thanks all for your replies. I have been able to gather more information:

- I can have the sql server on another box

- at Peak period we are forecasting 75 concurrent users

- I am assuming my site will use a very standard range of DotNetNuke modules

- There is no log in functionality. Mainly pictures and images and a fancy front page flash and maybe a store locator?

Based on the above, can anyone comfortably give an estimated number of concurrent users the site could handle? 50/100/1000/1000+?

Thanks,

Jon

i'd say between 100 and 1000 concurrent visitors should be possible, but probably more with no logons going on. Mind you, dotnetnuke.com is quite a busy site with lots of people using the forums module, which takes up a lot of resources. Up until a few months ago this site was running on one server (sql on separate server)

Anyway... you might need to do quite some optimization so it would be usefull to hire an expert for that

Thanks Erik,

About how many concurrent users were you getting on the dotnetnuke.com site when it was running on one server? was the server similar to my one?

Regards,

Jon

Jon, I don't know about specifics on the dotnetnuke.com servers, visitors were about the same as they are now, you can see that on the front page of the site

if you really want to know what your server can do you should set up a stress test with a site that resembles your final site. I understand you want to give your boss exact information, but AFAIK this is not an exact science, as i said before there are way too many variables. Also, nobody you will ask can give you any guarantees because of this. 75 concurrent unauthenticated users does not seem much so your server should run fine....
