I couldn't find any references to [BANNERPANE] and it doesn't create a container in the skin when I put it into my html file.

I've tried putting a [BANNER] tag in which works when I enable the Banners to show under site settings. Unfortunately I can't see how you restrict which groups are shown in the banner? Is there a way to do that? I don't want ALL of the banners showing up in the header of the site and I'd like to be able to use the banner module in other places on the site. (again restricted to a group)

any help appreciated!

By [BANNERPANE] I think he meant to create a special pane in your skin for the banner, then configure the content in that pane for each page.
