Is there a way to change the location of the Portal Root? I want to store these images on a NAS and not on the actual server teh site is on.

placing portal root outside the application is not supported. Your only option would be to run the complete application from the nas

I haven't tried, but you might be able to place a virtual directory under the portal root pointing to the NAS.
