DotNetNuke Configuration Error
Domain Name "[DOMAINNAME]" Does Not Exist In The Database

DotNetNuke supports multiple portals from a single database/codebase. It accomplishes this by converting the URL of the client browser Request to a valid PortalID in the Portals database table. The following steps describe the process:

1. Web Server Processing

When a web server receives a Request from a client browser, it compares the file name extension on the target URL resource to its Application Extension Mappings defined in IIS.
Based on the corresponding match, IIS then sends the Request to the defined Executable Path ( aspnet_asapi.dll in the case of ASP.NET Requests ).
The aspnet_isapi.dll engine processes the Request in an ordered series of events beginning with Application_BeginRequest.

2. Application_BeginRequest ( Common.Globals.asax.vb )

The Request URL is parsed based on the "/" character
A Domain Name is constructed using each of the relevant parsed URL segments.

Examples:

URL: http://www.domain.com/default.aspx = Domain Name: www.domain.com
URL: http://209.75.24.131/default.aspx = Domain Name: 209.75.24.131
URL: http://localhost/DotNetNuke/default.aspx = Domain Name: localhost/DotNetNuke
URL: http://www.domain.com/virtualdirectory/default.aspx = Domain Name: www.domain.com/virtualdirectory
URL: http://www.domain.com/directory/default.aspx = Domain Name: www.domain.com/directory

Using the Domain Name, the application queries the database ( Portals table - PortalAlias field ) to locate a matching record.

Note: If there are multiple URLs which correspond to the same portal then the PortalAlias field must contain each valid Domain Name in a comma seperated list.

Example:

URL: http://localhost/DotNetNuke/default.aspx
URL: http://MACHINENAME/DotNetNuke/default.aspx
URL: http://209.32.134.65/DotNetNuke/default.aspx
PortalAlias: localhost/DotNetNuke,MACHINENAME/DotNetNuke,209.32.134.65/DotNetNuke

Note: If you are installing the application to a remote server you must modify the PortalAlias field value for the default record in the Portals table according to the rules defined above.

"Domain Name "[DOMAINNAME]" Does Not Exist In The Database" It did not even show my domain. It wasn't www.mydomain.com or www.mypersonalwebsite.org. It was "[DOMAINNAME]".

I googled for this and of course I searched this forum too. I found a bunch of information about this. However, I could not find any solution to fix it. The portal Alias seemed to be fine when i looked up the table.

1. Trying to update the DNN version(4.90). > failed. It gave me a save error above. It didn't excute sql.

2. I deleted all DNN files. I put back backed-up DNN files (I made the backup just before I tried to upgrade the system).

3. I am still getting the error above.

I don't get it... scratching my head for 4 hours so far...

I actually made a backup for database too. I'll try restoring the database tomorrow. however, if you have any hints, please help me!

Original DNN: 4.30.

when was this message presented - during initial installation procedure? Did you setup your IIS properly, pointing the domain name to the DotNetNuke installation directory?

After you fixed server configuration, you may need to restart installation from the beginning (unzip files, recreate blank database).

Hello Sebastian,

It's upgrade. I was going from DNN 4.3(or so) to DNN 4.9. After I threw in upgrade files to the DNN directory, I opened the site and usually start upgrade process automatically. Well,,, it did not. It gave me the error message above. IIS is set it propery because it's a same directory and I did not have to do anything.  I wonder why the message says "[DOMAINNAME]". I've been reading similar error postings and they all have real domain name like www.mysite.com instead of [DOMAINNAME].

Anyway, thank you for your help, Sebastian. I'll restore the database and try unzipping the files again. If anybody else can give me any solutions, that would be wonderful.
